Course description: Introduction to a variety of Brazilian rhythms, musical trends and instrumental music through a selected repertoire with focus on Chôro, Bossa Nova, Frevo, Baião rhythms and the works of composers such as Gismonti, Toninho Horta, Hermeto Paschoal, Guinga and Jobim.
The aim here is to acquaint students not only with the extremely popular Bossa Nova and Samba forms but also with the other equally rich and beautiful aspects of Brazilian music.
Course objectives:
- Focus on solo playing, accompanying and playing within a musical ensemble (trio, quartet and other formations including bass and drums)
- Audiovisual sessions enabling the student to discover the percussion instruments used in Brazilian music.
- Knowledge of these instruments will enhance students’ rhythmic approach and reinforce their acquisition of this musical culture so that they can integrate it into their own musical language.
